The amphitheatre hosts large-scale opera and pop performances in the summer, often featuring major international stars - the tourist office has details. The only reliable central club is Uljanik,
Dobrilina 2, a counter-cultural club of many years' standing that holds DJ nights (anything from commercial tech-no to alternative rock) throughout the year, as well as live gigs on a big open- air terrace in summer - posters in town will provide an idea of what's on. Fort Bourguignon has been used as a venue for rave-style events in recent summers, but check the latest information before heading out there specially. Pula's main cinema is the Zagreb, bang in the centre at Giardini 12.
Ever since 1953 the Amphitheatre has hosted the Pula Film Festival (early Aug), which traditionally premieres the year's crop of domestic feature films. Back in the days when the Yugoslav film industry produced several big-budget features a year, the Pula Film Festival was a major international glam-fest which attracted big name stars - and guest-of-honour President Tito revelled in the opportunity of being photographed next to actresses like Gina Lollabrigida, Elizabeth Taylor and Sofia Loren. Now that the Croatia only produces a handful of (largely low-budget) films a year, the festival has rather lost its way - but attempts have been made to breathe new life into the event by including more international films. Contact the tourist office for further details. Other annual events of significance include Valkana Beach, an outdoor rave DJ event usually held in the town of Medulin, 12km southeast, in early August; and IstriaEthnojazz, exploring the boundaries between traditional music and more contemporary styles, with concerts in Pula, Svetvincenat and Pazin.
